Strictly Musicals 3 - The Greatest Show

Let the Good Times Return

"A wonderful opportunity to see hits from the biggest shows in musical theatre all on one night"

The past 18 months have for most of us seen a unique change to life; lockdowns, working from home, unsettling news and in worst cases, illness and loss. At times like this it is human nature to look back, before the pandemic and seek out times when things seemed happier, more settled and enjoyable. It is difficult to look ahead and see such times returning anytime soon and yet, on the near horizon is something which, for thousands of people, will give them an escape, a feeling of normality and something to look forward to and enjoy.
Darlington Operatic Society’s Strictly Musicals 3 – The Greatest Show.

Darlington Operatic Society has been the premier amateur musical theatre company in the North East for many years, providing twice yearly shows and giving members and theatre-goers fantastic opportunities to enjoy the very best of musical theatre. Back in 2013 they ran an Autumn spectacular, ‘Strictly Musicals’ which showcased some of the most popular musical numbers from shows such as Evita, Les Mis, Sunset Boulevard, Phantom and Wicked. Met with both critical and public acclaim, it was a gatehouse for many to shows they would not normally have chosen and widened appreciation for musicals (resulting in a marked upturn in ticket sales for future musical productions).

A second ‘Strictly’ followed in 2017 and again this proved to be a smash hit, allowing cast and crew to explore Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You, Miss Saigon, Top Hat to name but a few. Led by the company Director and choreographer Joanne Hand and Musical Director Steven Hood, the numbers featured stunning dancing, wonderful choreography and impressive sets, all performed by 40+ cast members whose talents rival any professional production company.

Now, in 2021, (having had to postpone the initial run), Strictly Musicals 3 is about to land and it looks like the pedigree of the previous 2 shows is even stronger. Taking numbers from West End and Broadway mega-hits Hamilton, The Greatest Showman, The Book of Mormon, The Bodyguard, Cabaret, Les Miserables, Sister Act and many more, this guarantees to be 2 hours of high octane, fun-filled song and dance.

With powerful leads channelling Whitney Houston & George Hearn, 40 strong ensemble dance routines and a 12 piece orchestra, this really will be The Greatest Show seen at Darlington Hippodrome.

Opening on Wednesday 20th October and running until Saturday 30th tickets are still available, but selling very fast – visit here for more details and to book shorturl.at/tOP25

Les Miserables at Theatre Royal Newcastle

THE must see production of our generation, this is phenomenal theatre which redefines excellence.

Based on Victor Hugo’s story of the French revolution and blending sin, redemption, hope and despair, Les Mis is as relevant and compelling in today’s society as it was in the mid 19th Century.

On tour and bringing over 30 years of West End success, this is an opportunity to join in the revolution at one of the country’s best venues for amazing theatre.

The sets are epic, scenes mould and flex right before your eyes and are magical in the way they change; the lighting and use of projection is breathtaking and the sound, especially during the battle scenes, is reminiscent of Hollywood war films, the audience ducking and shaking as gun shots and ricochets whistle all around the auditorium.

Last night we witnessed, in abundance,  a normally very rare occasion in live theatre – complete silence.  Silence as the audience sat transfixed through every scene, breaths held in awe and anticipation; silence used brilliantly by the cast & orchestra to heighten the drama and of intimate scenes as a counterpoint to the intensity of the impending battles and, at the end of two particular songs, Bring Him Home and On My Own, a full second of spellbound silence before the audience erupted into applause.

Killian Donnelly as Jean Valjean gives a brilliant portrayal of a man consumed – initially by his desire to escape, then by his own disillusionment of society as he is shunned (despite his desire to make something good of his life) and finally trying to make peace with his past and protect the future of his family.  Donnelly’s range and emotional input ensure that the audience share his raw anger in Who Am I and his angst and turmoil in Bring Him Home.

Nic Greenshields plays Javert, the former prison warden turned bounty hunting law maker who crosses paths again and again with Valjean, their fates entwined like two ivy vines each striving to fulfil their own destinies.  Nic portrays Javert as a larger than life man, huge stage presence with a palpable obsession for law and order.  The dynamic between Donnelly and Greenshields is of such constant tension that it is almost a relief when Javert, unable to stand Valjean’s hold over him after saving his life,  jumps into the Seine (a scene which brilliantly makes use of stage and projection)

The other standards which have become musical theatre folklore include the riotous Master of The House (which needs very close watching to catch all the tricks and stunts), the heartbreaking I Dreamed a Dream and the anthemic One More Day, all of which are set and choreographed so perfectly that it is impossible to think of anyway they could be bettered.

For anyone who has watched and enjoyed the star filled Hollywood film version (with Hugh Jackman et al) this production is how Les Mis SHOULD be watched.  It is a piece of art and entertainment that defines excellence and brilliance and Newcastle Theatre Royal is the perfect host.  I am sure the ghosts of productions past were joining the full house in the 5 minute standing ovation.

This Cameron Macintosh production of Les Misérables runs at Newcastle Theatre Royal until 5th October with tickets and availability here - https://www.theatreroyal.co.uk/whats-on/les-miserables

Beyond the Barricade @ Darlington Civic

Give yourself over to absolute pleasure

Nostalgia always seems to make the past look better than the present; the summers were warmer, the roads quieter, petrol cheaper, wagon wheels (much) bigger so in this cold, wet June I had a real need for something to transport me back into those 'halcyon' days.

The formation of Beyond the Barricade was driven by the huge and dramatic growth in popularity of the modern musical theatre of the 70's and 80's. Sired in part by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, and married to Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Blood Brothers, the British musical was in it's dominance; the millions of theatre-goers revelled in the huge stages and thrilling stories, but most of all it was the songs and anthems that provided these shows with the longevity to span wars, governments, economic crises and all cultural changes.

Andy Reiss (look him up on Google, if there's been a musical hit over the past 30 years you'll find his name linked to it somewhere) has created a wonderful evening of musical indulgence, and with David Fawcett, Rebecca Vere and Katie Leeming has the perfect cast to bring the very best of the West End to any theatre.  The show has been touring longer than Westlife have been out of short trousers (David's joke, not mine - honest!) and they have formed a real sense of how to keep things fresh and fun.

Unofficially compered by David (and a wicked sense of humour), the show sweeps through a list of shows which I defy anyone to have not heard of or been to see, but it never feels like the cast are just 'going through the numbers'.  Each show is afforded it's own build up, scene setting and with a very intuitive choice of songs you get the full feeling of the show in a brief but powerful slice.

To give you an idea of what to expect, the shows sampled included: Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Blood Brothers, Lion King, Chess, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, We will Rock You, Jersey Boys and Evita (it's quite humbling to see how many of these are from Lord ALW).  What is equally impressive is that the cast have starred in all of these shows as full productions in their own right, they are not just great singers - their list of credits is so big you could believe they must have cloned themselves many times over, but I assure you there are only 4 of them.

This show tours almost constantly but with a huge choice of musicals to draw from, and a brilliant band and crew, they are constantly looking to freshen up the 'play list', introduce new numbers and mothball others, so even if you've seen this before you are guaranteed to see something different the next time.

I had a wonderful evening, as did Becca who spent the evening whispering "Ooo - I know this one..."
